Today Just Happens - 7.2.25
Your daily-ish dose of NYT Games, politics, sports, news, and anything else.
Good morning everyone and welcome to Tuesday, July 2, 2025. Today’s NYT Wordle and Connections were super tough for me and I required a lot of time, patience, and hints. Be sure to comment below on how you fared with today’s puzzles or anything else you’d like to share.
Let’s dive in.

Christ almighty, this was a mess right from the start. I can’t even tell you how mad I got at Purple. I eventually figured out the ridiculousness they were going for with that category, and while it is a pattern we’ve seen many times before, this one was a huge stretch. My clue for you: look at the first part of the words and think about High School. There you go. So dumb.

Yikes again! A double-whammy on today’s puzzles this morning to start the day. My starting word of ROATE barely helped at all, but luckily my second guess yielded more clarity. I will admit: I did need a hint on today’s game (which is totally fine because I said so). My hint for you today: this is something you might call onto yourself from a God (or something). Good luck today!
Today in the News
Big Dumb Expensive Bill Passes Senate
Everybody’s talking about the budget bill that is literally going to upend the lives of millions of people (and worse). As you’ve probably heard by now, it narrowly passed the Senate vote (51 - 50 with JD Vance being the tie-breaker) and now heads to the House for another round of debate, grandstanding, showboating, and news headline sensationalism.
There’s no way to put this lightly: if (and likely when) this Bill passes, it’s going to be bad news for the majority of Americans alive. How much you’ll be affected depends on where you land on the socioeconomic spectrum. As is the case with Republican-backed budgets, those Americans on the lower end will be negatively impacted the most.
The other group — unfortunately — will be immigrants currently living in this country. Roughly $168 billion is included in the Bill for ICE, which we all know will be used to buy heavier weaponry and fancier face masks for federal agents to infiltrate city “hot spots of crime” like restaurants, landscaping firms, and other small businesses. Meanwhile, Americans who make the lowest amount annually in their salaries will be taxed the most to help pay for this.
If all of this is making you feel like you’re living in a bad dystopian novel, you are not alone. Our only hope for a return to normalcy is the mid-terms in less than two years, where we are likely to see another pendulum swing for America.
To be fair, I’m not entirely sure that’s a great thing, either. Time will tell.
Thanks as always for stopping by! Remember to comment below.
Bad dystopian novel is an understatement.
Being a former teacher, my heart breaks for our children. They have grown up practicing for active shooter drills & now, some have reached out to me because they now fear their families will be deported. I don't know what to tell them.
I am sickened by the Big Bad Bill on its way to fruition. Today's Connections was almost impossible for me! I had to read some comments in Connection Companion to figure out purple. The random number of letters in the starts of the years threw me. Plus, my lack of rap-scene knowledge put me behind the eight-ball!
